questions on cleaning and maintenance of a Ruger mini 14?
how often if at all should you disassemble and clean the gas piston assembly? where does the gas piston relieve pressure from, the chamber or in the middle of the barrel where it is located? where can I find a flexible cleaning rod as seen in this video mini 14 cleaning http://ruger.com/products/mini14AllWeatherRanchRifle/extras.html? all I have is the standard brass cleaning rods.
thanks
My stainless mini 14 has corrosion around the gas block from not being cleaned well enough. The gas pressure escapes at the gas block. The crud builds up around the gas block and around the front nd of the operating rod. You will see the crud when you field strip it. Also clean out the crud from inside the forend.
I will also recommend a buffer that goes on the gas block for the op rod to hit when it returns. The gas block screws on mine broke off at around 3000 rounds.
